Al Stephen Unger

Al Stephen Unger, 93 of McCook, Nebraska died Thursday November 5, 2009 at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

He was born March 29, 1916 in Herndon, Kansas to Andrew and Thersia Unger.

He was a 1934 graduate of St. Mary's in Herndon.

He married Margery Dorothy Bahl on August 28, 1944 in Portland, Oregon. She preceded him in death April 13, 2005.

Al was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Jeannie Milligan and her husband Tom of Shawnee, Kansas, one granddaughter, Teresa, her husband Jeff Burton of Dallas and two great granddaughters, Alyssa and Madison.

He was preceded in death by one infant son, Matthew, three brothers, Joseph, Andrew and Matthew Unger and five sisters, Mary Hutfles, Susan Murphy, Anna Unger, Florence Hogen, Veronica Roberts, and his parents.

Al was the owner of a grocery in several locations in Benkelman, Portland, Oregon, and McCook before becoming the owner and proprietor of Al's Army Store of McCook in the late 1950's. He was an outstanding entrepreneur who was ahead of his time, pioneering discount retail business practices that impacted the McCook community for many years.

He still managed time to fish and boat with family and friends at his cabin in Cambridge.

Al's sense of humor and unique outlook on life was enjoyed by everyone that knew him.

Memorials were suggested to the McCook Y M C A.

Rosary was at 7 p.m., Monday, November 9, 2009 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook.

Mass of Christian Burial took place at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiatingn with burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
