Alfred Lee Hallowell, age 84, died Monday, January 12, 2009 at McCook Community Hospital.
He was born April 30, 1924 in Scandia, Kansas to Maxey Alfred and Hattie Harriet (Newcomb) Hallowell. He graduated from Scandia High School in 1943.
He married Edna Mae Haser on December 25, 1943 in Scandia, KS. To this union two sons were born, Terry and Robert.
He entered the US Navy on April 7, 1943 and was honorably discharged on March 24, 1944.
He was a member of First Congregational Church of McCook, and lifetime member of Elks BPOE, the American Legion and VFW.
He managed the American Legion Baseball program for several years and maintained his interest and support of the program his entire life. He followed and supported the American Legion Baseball teams and the Bison and McCook Community College sports. He was an avid Husker Football Fan attending games in Lincoln for many years and even followed the team to Hawaii. Alfred bowled on the Olympia bowling team for many years; they were competitive and successful on the local and state level.
He hunted, fished, played golf and played town team basketball, softball and baseball. He was a Little League coach and was involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years. His love of sports came naturally as he participated in Football, Basketball, Track and Baseball in his own high school days.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and great-grandfather. Following all the children's and grandchildren's activities and sports as he could (he even went to dance recitals). He was a faithful caregiver for Edna in her final years and again for Marge.
He worked for Debus Bread Co, (He moved to McCook in 1949 with Debus) Omaha World Herald, Ranchers Supply, Gamble Robinson and McCook Community College.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Maxey and Hattie Hallowell; step-father, Hank Demars; wife, Edna in 1992; sister, Helen Breault; brother-in-law, Arlis White; nephew, Greg White; and special friend and companion, Marge Richardson in 2008.
He is survived by his children, Terry L. Hallowell (wife Jean) of McCook, Robert L. Hallowell (wife Dorla) of Blaine, MN; six grandchildren, Ryan Hallowell of Lincoln, Casey Lashley (husband Rusty) of Lincoln, Tye Hallowell of Independence, KS, Tate Hallowell (wife Celeste) of Lincoln, Kyanne Hallowell (Kevin) of Brooklyn Park, MN, Megan Polzin (husband Bryan) of Eustis, Florida; six great-grandchildren, Jadine and Dalton Hallowell, Mitt and Lawson Lashley, Blake and Sierra Meyer.
Memorials were to be given in his name
Funeral services were Friday, January 16, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at First Congregational Church in McCook with Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Inurnment in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
