Alfred Henry Unger died Saturday, August 13, 2005 at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial, Nebraska at the age of 90 years and 4 days.

Alfred was born on August 9, 1915, in Red Willow County, Nebraska to Fred Frederick and Eva Margaretha “Emma” (Tilgner) Unger. He was baptized as an infant at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ash Creek and was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook. Alfred was educated at the St. John’s Church School and Red Willow County Country Schools. He received his high school education at Red Willow County High School.

On November 2, 1941, Alfred married Darlene Fern Orman at her mother’s beautiful home in Hayes County. They spent their first years on a farm in Red Willow County. In the spring of 1944, they moved back to Hayes County. In the spring of 1950, they moved to her parents’ farm where they remained the rest of his life. At this time he transferred his church membership to St. John’s White Lutheran Church where he was a member until it closed in 1976. He then transferred his membership to Trinity Lutheran Church in McCook where he remained a member. He held various leadership roles in the church throughout his entire life. His church and the education of his children were very important to him.

Alfred was a progressive farmer and cattleman. He also worked for the ASCS and was an adjuster and field man for Federal Crop Insurance Corporation for 25 years.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one granddaughter, Melanie Unger; five sisters, infant twins, Emma and Elizabeth, Clara Baumbach, Pauline Tauber, and Lydia Ackerman; and four brothers, Gus, Walter, Herman and Charley Unger.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Unger of Hayes Center; four sons, Fred Unger and wife, Lea, of Hayes Center, Don Unger and wife, Karen, of Fort Collins, CO, Jack Unger and wife, Jerrilynne, of McKinney, TX, and Jerry Unger and wife, Beverly, of Hayes Center; one daughter, Nancy and husband, Bill Jennett, of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alma Ackerman of McCook and Loraine Groothius of Ogden, UT; five sisters-in-law, Frances Unger of McCook, Lillian Orman of Riverside, CA, Ruth Wagner of Ventura, CA, Lorraine Morosic of McCook and Juanita Orman of Santa Ana, CA; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in his name to the St. John’s Lutheran Church (White), Trinity Lutheran Church (McCook), or Hayes County Ambulance Fund.

Funeral service will be Monday, August 15, 2005, 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, White, NE (rural Hayes County). Pastor Steven Neyhart will be officiating. Burial will be in the White Cemetery.
