Avery Winters

Avery William Winters passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. He was 91 years old.

Avery was born on December 25, 1919 at Bartley, Nebraska to William James and Della Mae (Nokes) Winters. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1937. On March 5, 1941, he entered the US Army and served as Technical Sergeant for the 204th Quartermaster Battalion. He was honorably discharged on May 18, 1945.

On September 20, 1941, he was united in marriage to Evelyn McBride in Lincoln. To this union three sons and three daughters were born.

Avery and Evelyn lived their entire married life in the Lebanon/Indianola area as a farmer and rancher. He was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Indianola American Legion.

Preceding him in death were his parents, William and Della Winters; sisters, Rava Black, Wilma Grieble, and Glema Warfield; brothers, Avis and Roy (Junior) Winters; son-in-law, Roady Ryan; and daughter-in-law, Tammy Winters.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Evelyn (McBride) Winters of McCook; children, Carol and husband, Rodney Crampton, of Riverside, CA, Richard (Dick) Winters and wife, Carla, of McCook, Ken Winters of Central City, Linda and husband, Lee Maiden, of McCook, Peggy and husband, Robert “Bob” Rauch of Lodgepole and Scott Winters and wife, Kris, of Cordova; sister, Arlene Murray of Lincoln; 26 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name to American Heart Association.

Visitation will be Friday from 1-8:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Rosary will be recited Monday, September 5, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola with Fathers, Thomas McGuire, Gary Brethour and Lothar Gilde as celebrants. Burial will follow in St. Catherine’s Cemetery with military honors.
