Trenton resident Carl E. Keller, age 90, died May 4, 2008 at Community Hospital of McCook. He was born in Trenton, November 8, 1917, to Howard G. and Bertha G. (Riley) Keller and graduated from Trenton High School in 1935.
Carl married Mary Jane Cole July 27, 1942 in Norton, Kansas, and shortly after was called by the US Army to serve in the World War II European Theater. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and received a Silver Star nomination for his service to our country.
Following military discharge, Carl worked in construction until 1952, when he was severely injured in the construction of the Trenton Dam. He retrained as a linotype operator and worked for area newspapers until 1959, when he accepted a similar position in Idaho. While in Idaho, he worked for both the St. Anthony Chronicle News and the Buhl Herald. Carl and Mary returned to live in the Trenton area in 1974.
Fishing, woodworking, cooking, gardening, and sports were a few of Carls interests. He was most often known to family, friends, and neighbors as a well-rounded fix-it guy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Bertha; his wife Mary Jane in 2001; and nine brothers and sisters.
Carls survivors include his children, Leon K. Keller and wife Gin of Round Rock, TX, William D. Keller and wife Lana of Sidney, Carlene R. Keller of McCook, Marilyn K. Salter and husband James of McMinnville, OR, Gail Kohn of McCook; sisters, Eleanor Brown of Trenton, Evelyn Atwood of Englewood, CO; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial graveside services took place Saturday, May 24, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at the Trenton Cemetery. A military honor guard was provided by the Trenton Veterans. A life celebration dinner followed at the Trenton Community Center from 12-3 p.m.
Memorials were to be directed to the Trenton Rescue Service in his name.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
