Carl August Weidner

Carl August Weidner died Sunday March 28, 2010 at the Cambridge Hospital, Cambridge, NE. He was 89 years old.

Carl was born to Carl F. and Dorothea A. (Kahle) Weidner on August 2, 1920, at the family farm south of Culbertson.

He was baptized August 22, 1920, by Pastor A. F. Wegener in the Lutheran faith. He was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Culbertson in July of 1934. He graduated from country school district #62 in 1932. He worked on the family farm until he was inducted into the Army in August of 1942. He took his basic training for three months at Camp Roberts, California, then spent 6 month at Fort Custer, Michigan for M.P. Training. He served one year in England, then with the 1st and 3rd U.S. Army in the invasion of France, and many other battles including the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged Nov. 19, 1945 and went back to farming.

On April 22, 1947, he married Blanche Wendelin at St. John's Lutheran Church of rural Crete by Pastor Carl Pebler. They lived in Culbertson a few months before moving to their farm seven miles Southeast of Trenton, where they have lived since. They were blessed with three children, Carleen, Carl W. (Bill) and Russell. Carl enjoyed farming and working with his cattle, before he retired. He and Blanche enjoyed traveling to the mountains to improve her health. They also enjoyed attending army reunions of the 769th MP Battalions, and seeing some of his old buddies. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great blessing to him and he always enjoyed being together with his family. Carl has been a resident of El Dorado Manor since July 2008.

Carl was active in Grace Lutheran Church in Trenton for many years. He then transferred to Peace Lutheran in McCook, where he is still a member.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Dorothea Weidner; brother, Frank Weidner; brothers-in-law, Herbert Ketelsen, Elmer Wendelin, and wife LaVerne, Glen Wendelin and wife Rosie and Raymond Kattau.

Surviving him is his wife, Blanche of Trenton; sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Cindy Weidner of Highland, IL and Russell and Michelle Weidner of Culbertson; daughter and son-in-law, Carleen and Glen Andersen of Blair; his grandchildren, Darin and Dawn Andersen of Blair, Emily and Geoff De Old of New York City, NY, Amanda and Keith Ripperda of Sherman, IL, Keri and Ben Moore of Troy, IL, Matt and Georgina Weidner of Highland, IL, Adam Weidner and fiancé©e, Emily Reid, of Highland, Jarod Weidner of Kearney, and Elizabeth and Calen Weidner of Culbertson; great-grandchildren Grant and Colin Ripperda and Tyler, Hope and Makayla Andersen. Also surviving him, is his brother, Herman and wife Annice Weidner of Culbertson; sister, Dorothy Ketelsen of Highland; sister-in-law, LaVerna Kattau of Crete; nieces, Marilyn Weidner of Lincoln, Debra Wendelin of Martell, Diane Gropp of Crete and her family; nephews, Ronald Weidner of Culbertson, and Todd and Maria Wendelin and their family of Crete; cousins and many friends.

Memorials were to be given in his memory to KNGN Radio Station.

Funeral services were at Peace Lutheran Church Friday, April 2, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. with Pastor Tom Albertson officiating. Burial took place at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, NE.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
