Derek Brent Sheffer

Derek Brent Sheffer, age 71, of McCook, NE, formerly of Hutchinson, KS, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2022, at the Community Hospital in McCook.

Derek was born on June 21, 1951, in Phillipsburg, KS to Winton Lott and Peggy Jeanne (Stice) Sheffer. He received his education in Stockton, Kansas where he graduated from high school.

Derek was united in marriage to Paula Suzanne Schmidt on September 1, 1984 in Enid, OK.

Derek worked for AutoZone for many years in Hutchinson, KS until his retirement in 2016.

Derek received his pilots license and loved to fly. He especially enjoyed flying a Cessna 172. Derek loved to cook, put puzzles together, but his greatest joy was his grandchildren. He was a member of the McCook Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Cella Gregg; brother-in-law, Homer Schoeller; and parents-in-law, Jakie and Beverly Schmidt.

Those left to celebrate his memory are his wife, Paula Sheffer of McCook; children, Darin Sheffer of Ellsworth, KS, Joey Ciarla of Fort Collins, CO, Patty (Jeff) Tidyman of McCook, NE, Janae (Ryan) Gorman of Edmond, OK; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Karla Schoeller of Halstead, KS; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested in Derek’s name for future designation and may be directed to Carpenter Breland Funeral Home, c/o the Sheffer Family, PO Box 476, McCook, NE 69001.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson, Kansas, with Pastor David Stevens officiating.

Private family burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery in Hutchinson, Kansas.
