Donald LaVerne Jumps

Donald LaVerne Jumps of Culbertson died Saturday, December 16, 2006 at his home. He was 70 years old.

Don was born on March 23, 1936, in Hayes County, Nebraska to Benjamin Harrison and Freda (Behrendsen) Jumps. He graduated from Culbertson High School in 1954.

On September 13, 1958, he married Mary C. Stromp. To this union two daughters were born. They made their home in Culbertson where Don worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service as a field technician. He retired in 1994.

His most enjoyment came from spending time with his children and grandchildren and following their activities. He enjoyed auctioneering and spending time on the farm. He loved all sports, especially watching Bison football. He spent many hours visiting with friends at the K-Store in Culbertson.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Arlene Chambers; and two brothers, James “Jack” and Robert Jumps.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Culbertson; daughters, Katherine Jo and husband, Steve Hanchera, of Swisher, Iowa and Kristyl Ann and husband, Scott Hanchera, of Danbury; three brothers, Glenn Jumps and wife, Noreen, of McCook, Darwin Jumps and companion, Mary, of McCook and Benjamin “Ben” and wife, Cheryl, of Bailey, CO; sister, Betty Felker of McCook; sisters-in-law, Janeice Jumps of Culbertson and Jean Bittner of Albion; and four grandchildren, Marissa and Andrea Hanchera and Lindsay and husband, Lee McConville, and Alex Hanchera; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name to the Kearney Cancer Center.

Funeral services were Tuesday, December 19, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Culbertson with Pastor Bradley Rick officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson Cemetery.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
