Donald Edward Sughroue, Sr. of Cambridge, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at Kearney Regional Hospital, with all of his children, their spouses, and grandchildren by his side. He was 80 years old.
Don was born April 5, 1934 to Francis W. and Johanna (Schutte) Sughroue at the family farm near Bartley, Nebraska. He attended District #39 in his grade school years. He graduated from Indianola High School in 1952. He farmed with his father until his father’s death in 1959.
On August 18, 1953 he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, L. “Jean” Fisher at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola. They made their home in East Indianola and eventually moved to the family farm. To this union five children were born. They continued to farm north of Bartley for the next 50 years until their retirement in 1995 at which time they moved to Cambridge. He was later employed with the city of Cambridge for ten years.
He was a devout Christian and member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola and later St. John’s Catholic Church in Cambridge where he was active in the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the McCook Elks Lodge and Indianola and Cambridge Lions Club. He served on several boards including the Bartley School Board, Board Bartley Rural Fire Department, I & RW Coop Board, and ASCS Board of Red Willow County.
Don enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Johanna Sughroue; daughter, Agnes Marie Sughroue; son, Daniel F. Sughroue; two sisters, Mary Alice Lyons and Frances Allen; three brothers, Gerald, Charles and James Sughroue; three sisters-in-law, Rita Sughroue, Leah Sughroue and Ann Sughroue; brothers-in-law, Dale Lyons and James Ryan.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Sughroue of Cambridge; daughters, Cindy Fahnholz and husband Dale of McCook and Kathy and husband, Gaylord Smallfoot of Eustis; son, Donnie Sughroue, Jr. and wife, Angie, of Bartley; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; sister, Nellie Ryan of Indianola; brother, Thomas Sughroue of Culbertson; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Memorials may be given in his name.
Rosary will be held 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church with Father Greg Pawleski, Father Adam Sughroue and Father Mark Pfeiffer officiating. Inurnment will follow in the St. Catherine’s Church Cemetery.
