Dorothy Mae Garrett

Dorothy Mae Garrett of Hayes Center passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. She was 75 years old.

Dorothy was born on February 17, 1937 at Stanford, Nebraska to parents, John Theodore and Elsie Mae (Warren) Chambers. She was baptized in the Baptist Church in Holbrook. She graduated from Hayes Center High School with the class of 1977.

On January 14, 1954, she was united in marriage to James Robert Garrett in Hayes Center. To this union five children were born. They made their home in the Hayes Center Community where Dorothy was a busy mother and homemaker. She worked for Garrett Sand and Gravel as a bookkeeper for 27 years as well as for the Malleck Oil Gas Key for 20 years. She also drove the school bus for Hayes Center Schools for over 30 years.

Dorothy was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She had a passion for working in her yard, especially her flowers. She also enjoyed water skiing, dancing, and making an everyday visit to the grocery store.

Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Elsie Chambers; infant daughter, Lanola Ann Garrett; daughter, Debra Spickelmier; and son, Lester “Bud” Garrett.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Jim Garrett of Hayes Center; son, Jerry Garrett and special friend, Albert Joyce, of Hayes Center; daughter, Brenda and husband, Chuck Yeager, of Hayes Center; brothers, Theodore “Junior” Chambers of McCook and Howard Chambers and wife, Doris, of Lexington, NE; sisters, Lorine Bogus of McCook and Diane Renfro of Cherokee Village, AR; daughter-in-law, Cathy Garrett of North Platte, NE; son-in-law, Merle Spickelmier, of Hemingford, NE; 13 grandchildren, Tiffany (Danny) Gullion of Culbertson, NE, Lacy (Jeremy) Hitchcock of Hemingford, Justin Spickelmier of Hemingford, Mitch (Cindy) Totten of Wichita, KS, Heather (Wes) Frederick of Hershey, NE, Jessica (Travis) Reich of Norfolk, NE, Katie Garrett (fiancé, Justin Dean) of North Platte, Travis Garrett of Hershey, Shelley Hale of Hayes Center, Jeremy (Lindsey) Loomis of Hayes Center, Audra (Brock) Kennedy of Omaha, NE, Stefani Yeager of Hays, KS, and JR (Jessica) Dack of Maywood, NE; 13 great-grandchildren, Bryson and Emily Gullion, Keagan and Emma Hitchcock, Addina and Landrie Totten, Addison Frederick, Boston Dean, Lilly and Coy Hale, Grace Loomis and Hailey and Sierra Kennedy; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.

Memorials may be given in her name and will be given to the Hayes Center Fire Department and Bethel Baptist Church. Please make checks payable to James Garrett.

Visitation will be Sunday, October 21, 2012, 4-8:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.

Services will be Monday, October 22, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at the Hayes Center High School Gymnasium with Pastor Luke Wolford officiating. Burial will follow at the Hayes Center Cemetery.
