Douglas Allen Cappel “DC”, age 61, of McCook, Neb departed this life in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, Neb.
Doug was born November 28, 1957 in Colorado Springs, Colo. to Claude and Delores (Einspahr) Cappel after landing a plane en route to Oak Harbor, Washington where Claude was stationed. The eldest of their 8 children, Doug grew up on the family farm north of McCook. He graduated from McCook High School with the Class of 1976 and then attended Hastings College. Along with working on the family farm, Doug was a long haul truck driver for 30 years until retiring due to illness in 2014.
On November 11, 1978, Doug married Deb Swanson of McCook and to that union two sons, Mark and Jarrod, were born. In 1995, Doug met Terri Walz and on January 1, 1999 the two were married and he lovingly accepted four bonus children, Shane, Dallas, Gabe, and Desirae, into his family.
Doug was a longtime Broncos and Huskers fan; he enjoyed fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was well known for his pranks and sense of humor but also for being a kind and gentle man who would stop on the highway to help a stranger change a tire or fill a gas can. He was a hard worker and after having been a long haul truck driver for numerous companies in Nebraska throughout his 30 year career, he decided to buy his own truck in 2012 and went on to own his own company until his retirement in 2014. He is loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed by many.
Doug is preceded in death by his grandparents, nephew Justin Kraft, and grandson Isiah Cappel.
Doug is survived by his parents, Claude and Delores Cappel of McCook; wife, Terri Cappel of McCook; sons Mark and wife Christina Cappel of Axtell, Neb., and Jarrod Cappel of McCook; bonus children, Shane and wife Connie Walz of St. Clairesville, Oh., Dallas and wife Heather Walz of Salina, Ks., Gabe and wife Dani Walz of Douglas, Wyo., and Desirae Walz of Lincoln, along with 9 grandchildren, Logan, Jayden, Mason and Autumn Cappel, Brayden Ecker, Kaleb, Colton, Marleigh and Jack Walz; and his siblings, Rod Cappel, Bill and wife Nikki Cappel, Steve and wife Kelly Cappel, and Pam Cappel, all of McCook, Teresa and husband Dallas Hayes of Greenwood, Ne., Cheryl Blackwell of Houston, Tx., and Michael Cappel of Harrisburg, Pa.; along with six nieces, eight nephews, and numerous friends and other family members.
