Duane Eldon Dueland of McCook died Monday, March 9, 2009 at Donna, Texas. He was 76 years old.
Duane was born on September 19, 1932 in Frontier County, Nebraska to Vernon and Fern (Johnson) Dueland. At the age of three Duane's father died and his mother married Clifford Dueland who helped raise Duane. He graduated from McCook High School in 1950. Duane entered the US Army on March 5, 1953 and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on February 16, 1955. He continued to serve in the reserves for the next ten years.
On January 18, 1953, he married Joanne Jane Walters at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook. To this union four sons were born. They made their home on the family farm where Duane was a farmer and rancher. They moved to McCook in 1965. They also had a home in Donna, Texas where they spent the last ten winters.
While farming, Duane was the recipient of the Nebraska Aksarben Award in 1991. He was also awarded the Harold Larmon Outstanding Jaycee Award in 1966. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church where he volunteered as a youth leader and sang in the choir. He served on the McCook City Council for eight years having been the Mayor for part of that time. Other memberships included the McCook Elk's Lodge, Eagle's Lodge and American Legion. He volunteered as a little league coach while his boys where growing up. In his free time, Duane loved fishing, hunting and teaching people how to water ski. He enjoyed singing with the Barbershop and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Vernon and Fern Dueland; and step-father, Clifford Dueland.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Joanne Dueland of McCook; four sons, Dale and wife, Mary, Dan and wife, Peggy, all of McCook, Douglas and wife, Mary, of Hutto, TX and Darwin and wife, Kathy, of McCook; one sister, Darlene and husband Keith Stewart of North Platte; 14 grandchildren, Josey (Sally) Stone, Adam (April) Dueland, Jayce Dueland, Neal Dueland, Seth Stone, Jake Dueland, Jared Dueland, Jaxson Dueland, Danielle (Henry) Angle, Anna (Zach) Hunnicutt, Elizabeth Stone, Samantha Dueland, Emily Dueland and Karlie Dueland; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials were to be given in his name.
Memorial services were Monday, March 16, 2009, 10:30 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Inurnment took place in the Memorial Park Columbarium.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
