Dwaune Redfield

November 1, 1921 — August 12, 2018

Dwaune E. Redfield, a lifetime resident of Hitchcock County, most of his life of rural Palisade, Nebraska, passed away peacefully with some of his loving family and caregivers by his side at Cottonwood House assisted living in Columbus, Nebraska on Sunday, August 12, 2018.

Dwaune “Grandpa” was 96 years old. He had lived in Columbus the past 5 years to be close to the family. Dwaune was born Novemeber 1, 1921 northwest of Stratton, Nebraska on the family home place to Franklin Eugene and Myrtle M (Lorance) Redfield.

Due to family circumstances, Dwaune completed 8th grade at the country school across the canyon but then went on to work the family farm to provide for his mother and three younger siblings; Berniece, Lawrence, and Dwight.

In 1940, at the age of 19, with the help of his little brother Lawrence, he met a very special school teacher named DeVeta Collicott. She needed a Santa Clause for her Christmas program at school and Dwaune reluctantly agreed to the role. In return Dwaune asked DeVeta to go to a dance in Benkelman, Nebraska the night before her program, and that was the beginning of a long and happy life with eachother. On June 21, 1942 Dwaune married DeVeta. After many years of dancing, family, and friends, and an overall blessed life this timeless love story lasted for 70 years. Dwaune lost his companion, soul mate, and dancing partner on December 22, 2012.

Dwaune started his farming career with a team of horses and farming dry land crops when he was first married and lived on his family’s farm northwest of Stratton until they moved to a farm east of Palisade in 1947 where they raised three children; Sharlene, Keith, and Kaylene.

Dwaune saw many changes over his lifetime on the farm. He established a cow calf herd and had to learn the practices of irrigation. He also did commercial hauling, trucking hogs to Denver and Brush, Colorado to supplement the farm income.

Dwaune and DeVeta teamed up and volunteered for the 4-H program in Hitchcock County which all three children participated in. He served 30 years on the Hitchcock County Fair board after his children were all graduated and left from home. Dwaune was also a 50 year plus member of the Elks Club where he and DeVeta danced anytime they could (or anywhere that had good music for that matter). He was a member of the Palisade United Methodist church to be there with his family.

Aside from being an avid dancer, he enjoyed traveling with his family and friends with his favorite places being Washington D.C. and Canada. He loved playing card games at family gatherings, his land and hand feeding the passing deer and turkeys, raising livestock, and farming. He lived a long life full of happiness and blessings.
