Edna Mildred Schaffert of Atwood, Kansas, originally of Bartley, died Monday, May 15, 2006 at the Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood. She was 83 years old.
Edna was born on July 9, 1922, in Red Willow County, near Bartley, to John Frederick and Annie Augusta (Weiss) Fritz. She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1942.
On May 31, 1943, she married Melvin Dale Schaffert at the Bartley Trinity Lutheran Church. To this union two children were born. They made their home on a farm south of Bartley. Together they farmed until Melvin's death on February 2, 1998. Edna moved to Atwood in January of 1999 to be near her daughter.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Bartley American Legion Auxiliary, Bartley VFW Auxiliary and Trenton VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family, being outside, and she was a lover of all animals.
Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Annie Fritz; her husband, Melvin Schaffert; one brother, Walter Fritz; three half-brothers, John, Max and Carl Fritz; one half-sister, Freda (Fritz) Barth; and two grandchildren, Melvin and Marlene Memmelaar.
Survivors include her two children, Paul Schaffert and wife, Pat, of Indianola and Karen and husband, Lucas Memmelaar, of Atwood; one brother-in-law, Ervin Schaffert and wife, Lillian, of Indianola; six grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, Courtney Schaffert, Kris Schaffert and wife, Dora, and their son Aden, Alyssa and husband, Ramiro Trevino and their children, Xzander and Xzekiel, Caitlin Schaffert, Bonnie and her husband, Randy Carlock, and their children Monique and Elizabeth and Joshua Memmelaar; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Directory Fund.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 19, 1:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl and Pastor Don White officiating. The burial will be held at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery south of Bartley at 10:00 a.m.
