Elaine Carol Meeks, age 80, formally from Worland, Wyoming passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, NE. Elaine recently moved to Culbertson, Nebraska to be near her family.
Elaine was born December 26, 1932 in Gennesse, Wisconsin to August William and Olga Wilhelmina (Freudenstein) Bahr Sr.
Elaine graduated from high school in 1949 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. She married William Meeks on January 30, 1954 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Waukesha. Two daughters, Carol and Patti, were born to this union.
The couple moved to Gillette, Wyoming in 1968 and Elaine went to work at the Gillette News-Record as a proof-reader and later as a typesetter. Upon leaving the newspaper she joined the library staff at the Campbell County Public Schools as the bookmobile librarian. She traveled to all of the county’s rural schools providing library access to the children attending small country schools. She became close to several of the students and many have stayed in touch with her through the years. Elaine joined the Gillette offices of the Federal Land Bank Asso. of Wyoming transferring to the Worland offices in 1985 where she worked for several years before becoming a medical transcriptionist for Washakie County Hospital until her retirement.
Elaine enjoyed working crossword and jig saw puzzles and playing cards and table games with her grandchildren. Elaine and William spent many hours over the years dancing to their favorite polka music.
Elaine is survived by her two daughters, Carol and husband John Varilek of Culbertson, NE and Patti and husband Jay Westre of Aurora, CO; and her brother August Jr. and wife Sandra Bahr of Sussex, WI. Also surviving are seven grandsons J.D. and wife Karen Varilek and their children Anna and John of Omaha, NE, Brandon and wife Bradette Varilek and their children William and Blaine of Raymond, NE, Phil and wife Jennifer Varilek of Valdosta, GA, Ben Varilek of Latrobe, PA, Bryron Westre of Casper, WY, Darren Westre of Watford, ND and Galen Westre of Aurora, CO.
Elaine is preceded in death by her parents and husband, William (March 1, 1994).
Memorials are suggested in Elaine’s name.
No memorial services will be held in accordance with Elaine’s wishes.
