Biography
Eleanor Ruth Carter, died Friday, December 23, 2005, at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 74 years old.
Eleanor was born on February 6, 1931, in Indianola, to Marvin A. and Ruth E. (Liston) Nelms. She attended rural school through the eighth grade in Red Willow County and graduated from McCook High School in 1948. She attended McCook Junior College for one year and then began her teaching career of 42 years. She graduated from McCook Junior College in 1956 and from Nebraska State College in Kearney in 1960. She taught four years in Red Willow County rural schools and 38 years at East Ward and Central Elementary in McCook.
Eleanor married Oren E. Carter on September 5, 1970, at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook. She was a 50-plus year member of Memorial United Methodist Church where she served on various committees. She was church librarian, sang in the Chancel Choir, played in the Bell Choir and was president of the United Methodist Women for two years. She was also a member of Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and Chapter GY of P.E.O. She was a 4-H Leader for the Golden Rod Sew and Sowers for many years. In her free time, Eleanor loved to spend time in her vegetable and flower garden, cooking and sewing for all of her nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Marvin and Ruth Nelms.
Survivors include her husband, Oren Carter, of McCook; three brothers, Max Nelms and wife, Dona, of Bartley, Don Nelms and wife, Shirley, of McCook, and Roger Nelms and wife, Rose, also of McCook; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of friends.
Memorials may be given in her name to the Memorial United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were Tuesday, December 27, 2005, 10:30 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
