Elmer John Leitner, age 99, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2015 at Community Hospital in McCook.

Elmer was born November 21, 1915 in Herndon, KS to John H. and Theresa (Allacher) Leitner. He graduated from Herndon High School in 1933.

Elmer married Betty Raymond on June 1, 1941 in Oberlin, KS. To this union two children were born.

He taught school in a one room school house prior to joining the military. After serving his country he was a sales manager for Hormel Chevy.

Elmer entered the US Army in 1941 and was honorably discharged in 1946. During that time he served in Patton’s Headquarters in the European Theater in WWII. He was engaged in the European Theatre in Northern France, Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the bronze star and the EAME Service Medal.

He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and McCook Elks Club. He enjoyed fishing, stock car racing, and boating.

Surviving him is his friend, Pat McConville of McCook; son, Roger Leitner of Englewood, CO; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Leitner; son, Jon Leitner; two brothers, Earl and Emery Leitner; two sisters, Esther and an infant.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2015 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Royce Leitner officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
