Eugene Gilbert Houghtelling, 78, died Thursday, July 14, 2005 at McCook Community Hospital.
Eugene was born on April 16, 1927, at McCook, to Gilbert and Millie (Roberts) Houghtelling. He attended McCook Public Schools. Prior to finishing his senior year he was called into duty to serve his country. He entered the US Army on November 14, 1945 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on November 12, 1948. In 2001, Eugene was awarded an honorable high school diploma from the President of the United States.
Eugene married Devona Mae Carr on June 17, 1950. To this union five children were born. They made their home in McCook where Eugene was employed as a salesman for Kitty Clover for over 25 years. After his retirement he became a custodian at McCook Public Schools.
He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was an avid Husker fan, loved being with his family, especially the grandchildren, and spending time gardening with his wife. He also enjoyed studying the Disciple Bible lessons with his loving wife Devona.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Gilbert and Millie Houghtelling; his infant daughter, Tira Houghtelling; two brothers, Charles and Milton; and three sisters, Norma, Elda and Ellen.
Survivors include his wife, Devona of McCook; two sons, Rady Houghtelling and wife, Jeanette, of Kalispell, MT and Rory Houghtelling of McCook; two daughters, Teresa and husband, Ron Mihm, and Tamie and husband, Bill Pew, all of Lincoln; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Memorials were to be given in his name.
Funeral service were Tuesday, July 19, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
