Evelynn Marie Nickerson died Sunday, July 4, 2010 at Community Hospital in McCook with her family by her side. She was 74 years old.
Evelynn was born on December 3, 1935, in McCook to Edward Carl and Edna Mae (Cross) Friehe. She graduated from Culbertson High School in 1953. She later continued her education at McCook Community College with an Associate's Degree in 1981.
On June 19, 1956, she was united in marriage to David R. Nickerson. They made their home in McCook where they raised their five children.
Evelynn was a member of the First Congregational Church, Women's Auxiliary and taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of Epsilon Sigma Alta Sorority. She volunteered at the Jumble Shop, Meals on Wheels, Pink Ladies, served as Chairman of the Bloodmobile and PTA President. She was involved with numerous activities with her children including Girl and Boy Scouts. She enjoyed sewing, her flower garden, crafts, ceramics, and doing genealogy research. She and David wintered in Edinburg, Texas for 14 years. They traveled extensively throughout the world and acquired many new friends along the way.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Edward and Edna Friehe; foster grandchild, Derrick Deets; sister-in-law, Cathy Friehe; and brother-in-law, Rodney Nickerson.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, David Nickerson of Kearney; three sons, Thomas Nickerson and wife, Marijill, Robert Nickerson and wife, Susan, and Kenneth Nickerson and wife, Deanna, all of Kearney; two daughters, Nancy and husband, Tom Corey, of McCook and Judy Nickerson of North Platte; two brothers, Francis Friehe and wife, Jackie of Culbertson and Dale Friehe of McCook; one sister, Anita Friehe of LaVista; sister-in-law, Janice Nickerson of Modesto, CA; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Memorials were to be given in her name.
Funeral services were Thursday, July 8, 2010, 10:00 a.m. at First Congregational Church in McCook with Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
