Florene B. Burton

Florene B. Burton, age 93, of McCook, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Community Hospital in McCook, NE.

Florene was born on September 26, 1927 in Beatrice, NE to parents Fred and Tina Brandt. She was one of four siblings. Florene attended elementary school in Beatrice before her family moved to Hastings, NE where she graduated from Hastings High School with the Class of 1945.  Following high school, Florene attended Hastings College, Colorado College and the University of Virginia receiving both a bachelors degree and a masters degree in early childhood education.

Florene taught in Hastings and Colorado Springs until she retired after 43 years in the classroom.  Florene moved to McCook in 2001 and continued to be an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a teaching sorority. She was also a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in McCook where she participated in women’s groups at the local and state levels.

Florene was preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother in law, Dale (Winifred) Workman; and her brother and sister in law, Delbert (Sherrie) Brandt.

Florene is survived by one son, Douglas Burton of Dutch John, UT; brother and sister in law, Don (Marilyn) Brandt of McCook; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Visitation with family greeting friends will be held from 6 to 8PM on Sunday, November 22, 2020 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home, McCook.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10AM on Monday, November 23, 2020 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, McCook, with Pastor Thalia Woodworth officiating.

Burial will be held at 3PM on Monday, November 23 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Beatrice, NE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the scholarship fund at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 312 Seminole, McCook, NE 69001.
