Francis Hanes
October 15, 1920 — March 13, 2009
Francis L. Hanes, age 88, of 312 Hollow Road, Catawissa, PA, passed away March 13, 2009 in Bloomsburg Health Care Center following a brief illness.
He was born in Frontier County to H. Ellsworth and I. Fern Hanes. He farmed there except for the period of 3 ½ years when he was an anti aircraft gunner in the Army. He served in North Africa and Europe. His wife, Margaret, had been an aircraft spotter in the British Army at one of those sites. They married shortly after she immigrated to the U.S. in 1947. The couple and their two children: Lesley and Richard, moved to Bloomsburg, PA in 1954. In 1976 he, Margaret and Lesley moved to a farmett in Catawissa. He enjoyed horseback riding until the age of 80 and using his riding lawn mower like a farm tractor for various chores. He enjoyed watching baseball and football games. Most of his working life was spent at a Chevy Dealership preparing new and used cars for sale.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Charles, his parents, sisters: Mamie Crawford, Viva Wollman and his wife, Margaret.
He is survived by daughter, Lesley of Catawissa, son, Richard of Cheyenne, WY; grandsons: Brian and Jeff of CO, as well as brothers: Leo of Curtis, NE, Robert of Lasalle, CO, Dean of Loveland; sister, Carol Arent of Red Feather Lakes, CO and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home on Friday, March 20. 2009 1:00 p.m., with burial in the Indianola Cemetery. He had been a member of the Bloomsburg American Legion for thirty-years, so there was a military honor ceremony provided by the Indianola American Legion. Donations in his memory were to be given to the Indianola American Legion Post 344, 39547 US Highway 6, Indianola, NE 69034.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
