Garnet E. Henton, age 87, departed his earthly life and entered Heaven on Monday, March 23, 2015. He peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his family.
Garnet was born January 2, 1928 to Burr and Vaire (Godown) Henton in Danbury, NE. Garnet was baptized in the Congregational Church and he graduated from Danbury High School in 1946. Garnet enlisted into the United States Army in 1946 and received an honorable discharge in 1948. He then attended McCook Junior College where he played and received several records for basketball, then graduating in 1950.
Garnet married Dorothy Friehe on April 29, 1950 in McCook at the Peace Lutheran Church and to this union four children was born, Kathleen, James, Jane Marie, and Leah. Garnet and Dorothy were married for 64 years at the time of his passing.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather always taking great interest and pride in the activities and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Garnet raised his children in the Christian faith while always being a faithful servant of God and also a very active member at the Peace Lutheran Church. Garnet became a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in 1949. He enjoyed serving in multiple leadership capacities in many of the church congregation activities, including volunteering at the Pantry in McCook with Dorothy since 1990, and was also a member of the “Life Light” adult bible class at Peace Lutheran. He always kept God and his family first and was an unconditional loving dedicated man who will be deeply missed.
Garnet retired in January 1990 from the Burlington Northern Railroad after 36 years of service as a conductor, and was a lifetime member of the UTU (United Transportation Union). Garnet also served for 5 years on the Bureau of Reclamation and was also a member of the American Legion, American (ACBL) Bridge League, and was a Bridge Life Master. His hobbies included enjoying sports, sailing, hunting, fishing, golfing and playing bridge.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Burr and Vaire Henton; infant daughter, Jane Marie; brothers, William, Dell and his wife Marie, Richard, Robert, Willis and his wife, Martha; sisters, Shirley and her husband, Ed Hutchison, Phyllis and her husband, Everett Lingo.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of McCook; his children, Kathleen and her husband, Paul Stubbe of Jeffrey Lake, NE, James and his wife, Vickie Henton of Alliance, NE, and Leah and her husband, Bryan Fryer of Firestone, CO; grandchildren, Kim and her husband, Clint Jones of Pacifica, CA, Chris Taft of Wellfleet, NE, Sarah Ficenec of Omaha, Jason Stubbe of Cested Butte, CO, Joshua and his wife, Katie of Rochester, NY, Jason and his wife, Trinity Henton of Gering, NE, Jennifer and her husband, Jason Swanson of Hemingford, NE, Julie and her husband, Richard Meier of Scottsbluff, NE, Kyle Ellinger and Kayla Fryer both of Firestone, CO, along with numerous great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Delores Henton of McCook, NE; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and a host of friends.
Memorials may be given to Community Healthcare and Hospice, 407 West 5th St, McCook, NE 69001 or Peace Lutheran Church, 411 East 6th St, McCook, NE 69001.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home from 1:00-8:00 p.m. The family will be greeting friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 27, 2015, 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Albertson officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
