George John Vlasin of Hayes Center died Monday, October 20, 2008 at Eldorado Manor Nursing Home in Trenton. He was 84 years old.

George was born to Joseph John and Rose Marie (Kucera) Vlasin on February 22, 1924 in Hayes County on the family farmstead southeast of Hayes Center. He attended rural country school through the 8th grade.

On September 15, 1944, he entered the US Army. He served during World War II with distinguished honors as a military policeman. He was awarded citations and decorations including the World War II Occupation Medal, Army Good Conduct, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was also a qualified marksman during his service. He was honorably discharged on November 1, 1946.

On September 25, 1947, he was united in marriage to Betty L. Daniel at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook. George and Betty were blessed with three children. They made their home on a farm southeast of Hayes Center where George and Betty farmed. They retired in 1989 and moved to Hayes Center.

George was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Hayes Center American Legion Post 0287. Among his favorite things to do were spending time with his family and watching the Big Joe Polka Show.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Joseph and Rose Vlasin; two brothers, Ladik and Edward Vlasin; one sister and brother-in-law, Velma and Maurice Schuman; two brothers-in-law Charley Kurth and Anton Lankas; and two nephews, David and Regan Vlasin.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Betty Vlasin; two sons, Mark Vlasin and wife, Kim, of McCook and Monte Vlasin and wife, Dianne, of Neosho, MO; one daughter, Marlene and husband, Lowell Bedore, of Trenton; one brother, Joseph Vlasin and wife, Doris, of Hayes Center; two sisters, Gertrude Lankas of Atwood, KS and Agnes Kurth of Sierra Vista, AZ; eight grandchildren, Constance and husband, Jeremy Hardenbrook, Ketra and Cali Vlasin, Chelsea and husband, Justin Sexson, Cari Gigax, Shalee, Kayln and Lathan Vlasin; two step-grandchildren, Kody and Heath Bedore; four great-grandchildren, Eric, Korbin, Keaton and Pheonyx; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Rosary was Wednesday, October 22, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial took place on Thursday, October 23, 2:00 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Trenton with Father Val Bartek officiating, burial took place in the Hayes Center Cemetery.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
