Gerald LaVern Schaffert

August 13, 1932 — August 11, 2016

Gerald LaVern Schaffert, age 83, of Culbertson passed away on Thursday, August 11th, 2016 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

Gerry was born on August 13, 1932 in Aurora, Nebraska to Christian Schaffert and Elizabeth (Fritz) Schaffert, who moved their family to a farm south of Culbertson when Gerry was two weeks old. He would later graduate from Culbertson High School in1950 before attending McCook College.

On January 1, 1951 he married Virginia Huff and from that union two children were born. He built their home in Culbertson and farmed the Schaffert family homestead until his retirement. In 2013 the Schafferts moved to McCook.

Gerry and Virginia were active members of St. Alban’s parish, serving as needed over the years.

Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene; sisters, Lucille Gohl and Gwen Riemer.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia of McCook; son, Gerry 'Craig' (Mike) of San Francisco; daughter, Lesta (Bruce) Zimmerman of Omaha; grandsons, Andrew (Katie), Ryan (Rachel); and great-grand-daughters, Natalia and Isabel; his sister, Joyce (Rollie) Snuttjer; and sister-in-law, Dorothy (Orin) Nobles; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gerry was never one to pass up a game of pitch and his grandsons will miss watching their grandpa quietly 'shoot the moon'....and win!

Services will be held at St. Albans Episcopal Church in McCook, Monday, August 15th, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. Private inurnment at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Future Farmer's of America.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
