Harold Daniel "Dan" Vogel the son of the late George W. Vogel and Elizabeth (Spahn), was born on July 28, 1932 in Hayes County, Nebraska. He departed this life on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Imperial Manor in Imperial, Nebraska at the age of 79.
Dan attended local area schools before moving to Beverly Nebraska in 1946 with his family. He went to school there until he graduated the 8th grade, then he went to work for Wes Crampton and helping his parents.
On February 5, 1953, Dan entered the U.S. Army. He had 16 weeks of basic training in Fort Roberts, CA before being stationed in Butzbach, Germany where he was a mechanic. On February 2, 1955, he received his Honorable Discharge from the Army.
On June 30, 1957, Dan married Shirley Jane Jones in Culbertson. To this union three children were born. They made their home in the Culbertson area for their entire married life. After Dan lost the love of his life, and his anchor, his heart just wasn't in it anymore, so in 1990, Dan sold the family farm and moved to Lubbock, TX. He was an owner operator of a tractor/trailer and drove for Bud Baum. Dan moved back to Culbertson in1993, where he leased on with Kuglers. Dan loved to take an old, worn out, rusty-looking tractor and restore it to make it look like it was brand new again. He was a great friend, uncle, father, husband, grandpa and great-grandpa.
He was looked up to, and cherished by many. Dan was always pulling some kind of prank on someone that was always a high light of his life. He loved taking family vacations and trips to the State Fair. He was a member of the American Agriculture Movement in 1979 and participated in the tractor drive to Washington DC. He was a Commander of the VFW in Culbertson for many years.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Shirley; son, Kenneth William; sister, Ida Johnson; and brother, John Vogel.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Sharon (John) Barger of Lubbock, TX; Mary Forbes of Culbertson, NE; eight grandchildren; Charles, Jason, and Chad Barger of Lubbock, TX, Toni Moore of Bandera, TX, Dustin, Schyler, Austin and Tyler of Culbertson; 11 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephew, relatives, and special friends.
