Helen Helm, 93, of Oberlin, KS, died May 30, 2015 in Oberlin, KS.
Helen Margaret Sughroue was born January 29, 1922 in Frontier County, Nebraska to Clarence Edward Sughroue and Esther Loretta Hanthorn, she was the oldest of seven children. Helen began her education in rural schools. The family moved to Indianola, Nebraska in 1932 and she graduated from high school in 1938. She attended Kearney State College one summer. Helen taught rural schools five years and her pupils remained her friends for life.
She married John Francis Helm on October, 10, 1942 while he was in the Armed Services. Upon his return home they lived four years in the Indianola, Nebraska area and bought their farm and moved to the Lyle community in Kansas in 1949. They were the parents of four sons and four daughters.
Helen was a homemaker and 4H Club leader. She was the church organist at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola, Nebraska and also Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oberlin, Kansas. She loved all music. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Lebanon, Nebraska Co-Op for eleven years. Helen and John loved dancing and belonged to several square dance clubs.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Beaver Valley V.F.W Auxiliary and attended church at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oberlin, Kansas and St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola, Nebraska.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Esther, Husband John Helm, Son Fredrick L. Helm, Daughter Mary M. Helm, Granddaughter Theresa Helm, Great Grandson Jayce Helm, siblings Kenneth Sughroue, Doris Castelli and Stanley Sughroue.
Survivors include her Sons, James J. Helm (Yanis) of McCook, NE; John H. Helm (Pam) of Redmond, WA; Michael D. Helm (Deb) of Norcatur, KS; Daughters, Kathy Brashears (Robert) of Curtis, NE; Ceanne Rinehart (Martin) of Colby, KS; and Laurie Helm of St. Joseph, MO. Eighteen grandchildren and Eighteen great-grandchildren; siblings Florence Uerling (Jerry) of Indianola, NE; Clarence Sughroue of San Francisco, CA and Loretta Belknap (Richard) of Weston, WI.
Visitation will be held at Carpenter-Breland Funeral Home, McCook, NE; Monday, June 1, 2015, 1:00 pm - 7:30 pm with the family present from 6-7:30 pm. Rosary will be held at 7:30 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 2:00 pm with Fr. Thomas Schultes officiating.
Burial will follow in the St. Catherine's Cemetery, Indianola, NE.
Memorials may be given to the Lebanon American Legion, 40363 RD 709, Bartley, NE 69020.
The family invites all family and friends for a luncheon prior to the service, located at St. Catherine's Parish Hall at 12:30 PM.
