Herbert Ray Widener, age 78, of McCook, NE passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at his home in McCook.
Ray was born October 21, 1942 in Bridgeport, NE to parents Melvin P. and Hilda I. (Bentley) Widener. He was one of three children. On January 20, 1960, Ray enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served his country on the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt and was honorably discharged on December 13, 1961.
Ray married Judith (Louden) Widener on September 17, 1984 in Ainsworth, NE. The couple made their home in McCook. Ray was a member of the Catholic Faith. Over the years, Ray worked as a meat cutter and in his free time, enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a past member of the Jaycees, the VFW, the Elks Lodge and a lifetime member of the NRA.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Monte Widener.
Those left to celebrate his life include his wife, Judith Widener of McCook; six children, Brian (Angie) Pirnie of Fremont, NE, Dennis (Sandi) Widener of North Platte, NE, Doug (Lacey) Pirnie of Hot Springs, SD, Margot (Brian) Gibson of Meza, AZ, Mel (Lori) Widener of Kimball, NE and Shay (Shannon) Davis of Wadell, AZ; sister, Kay (John) Lauderbaugh of Dallas, TX; fifteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and a host of extended family members.
Private family services and burial with military honors will take place at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, Nebraska.
