Herman Henry William Ficken passed away Sunday, September 30, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 94.
He was born November 1, 1912 to John and Johanna (Noltensmeier) Ficken in Frontier County, Nebraska.
He was baptized December 15, 1912 and confirmed May 23, 1926, all at the Salem Lutheran Church. He attended rural and parochial school for nine years.
He married Edna Buell on May 4, 1938 at rural Salem Lutheran Church. To this union three daughters were born, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. They were a great source of joy in his later years. He was a loving father and husband and will be greatly missed.
He was a lifetime farmer. In August of 1983 they moved to Elwood to retire. There he enjoyed his yard work, flowers, and friends. In February 2004 illness forced him to move to Willow Ridge in McCook until his death.
He was presently a member of Peace Lutheran Church in McCook and previously a longtime member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood. He was very active in church work and served on various church boards. He served on school boards and was also active in various community organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Edna of 69 years; three daughters, Janet Hein and husband, Robert of McCook, Joan Burke and husband, Larry of Elwood and Carole Dreher and husband, Robert of Kearney; two brothers, Raymond Ficken and wife, Betty of Cambridge and Harvey Ficken and wife, Corrine of Eustis; seven grandchildren, Laura Preston and husband, Tom of Omaha, Randall Hein and wife, Dana of Lincoln, Jeff Burke of Elwood, Jerrod Burke and wife, Doris of Curtis, Sharon Livingston and husband, Lath of Minden, Angela Kugler and husband, Michael of Lincoln, Jodi Shea and husband, Alec of Laramie, WY; eight great-grandchildren, Katherine Preston, Evan Hein, Lauren and Logan Burke, Kaylee and Kelcie Burke, Leah Livingston, Olivia Kugler; and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Arthur Ficken; and sister, Alvena Wickenkamp.
Funeral services were at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood on October 5, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jeff Ernstmeier officiating. Burial took place in the Elwood Cemetery.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
