Howard M. "Deak" Huff died Tuesday, July 5, 2010, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. He was 85 years old.
Deak was born in McCook on July 28, 1924, to Henry Boyd and Ohna (Wedepohl) Huff. He graduated from McCook High School in 1947. He entered the US Army on April 5, 1943 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on January 17, 1946.
He was united in marriage to Shirley A. Callahan of Doniphan on May 31, 1981. They settled in Doniphan where Deak worked as a serviceman for KN Gas Company for 37 years. After his retirement he recycled metal.
Deak loved to go fishing, hunting, baseball, and Cornhusker Football. He had a true compassion for all children, especially for his grandchildren.
Proceeding him in death were his parents, Henry and Ohna Huff; two sisters, Marilyn Budde and Dorothy Carlton.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Huff of McCook; sons, George Huff and wife, Carol, of McCook, Tom Huff and wife, Cindy, of McCook, Bruce Huff and wife, Connie, of North Platte; daughter, Barbara Daily of McCook; step-son, Douglas Strop and wife, Collette, of Rapid City, SD; step-daughters, Kelli and husband, Mark Kniffen, of Kearney and DeAnn and husband, Mike Swearingen, of Greeley, CO; three brothers, Amor Huff of McCook, Virgil Huff and wife, Jean, of Pittsburg, PA, and Robert Huff and wife, Jean, of Cantonment, FL; 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, family and a host of friends.
Memorials were to be given to the Nazarene Church Building Fund.
Memorial services were Saturday, July 10, 2010, 4:00 p.m., at First Church of Nazarene with Pastor Emmanuel Reinbold officiating. Inurnment took place Monday, July 12, 2010, 11:00 a.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
