Janet Lee (Curry) Carfield Goodenberger, age 74, of McCook, NE passed away following a courageous battle with cancer on November 10, 2019 with her family by her side in McCook.
Jan was born November 28, 1944 in Beaver City, NE to parents George Samuel and Lenora Frances (New) Curry. She grew up and attended school in Beaver City.
On August 5, 1961, Jan married Edwin Carfield in Oberlin, KS. To this union three sons were born: Kevin, Dave and Darin. The family made their home in McCook where Jan and Ed ran two businesses together, Ed’s Well Service and Carfield Welding and Machine Shop. They enjoyed being involved with the boys and their horses. Lots of time was spent in 4-H, horse shows, competitions, and family trail rides. Ed passed away in 1990.
On October 26, 2002, Jan married DeWayne Goodenberger in McCook. Jan lovingly welcomed an additional six children to her family. Jan and DeWayne traveled many places together including Hawaii, which was one of her favorite places! They went on cruises, bus tours and motorcycle trips. The couple had spent the last several winters in Weslaco, Texas where they made many friends from numerous places.
Jan was one of the original Walmart employees in McCook and officially retired, after 27 years, in the fall of 2012. She loved collecting antique tea sets and china figurines. Jan was a member of the Eastern Star and the United Methodist Church where she volunteered as an usher and a greeter. She also enjoyed spending many hours serving dinner for Feed My Flock, working in the Methodist Food Booth during the county fair and helping at the Helping Hands Thrift Store.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Edwin Carfield; two sisters, Jean Woolwine and Marjorie Morris; and two step granddaughters, Marissa Goodenberger and Porsha Holliday.
Those left to celebrate her life include husband, DeWayne Goodenberger of McCook; her three sons, Kevin (Lori) Carfield, Dave (Chris) Carfield and Darin (Denise) Carfield all of McCook; six step children, Mitch (Theresa) Troutman of Danbury, NE, Kim (Robby) Holliday of McCook, Randy (Wendi) Goodenberger of McCook, Richard (Lindsey) Goodenberger of St. Paul, NE, Paul Troutman of Benkelman, NE and Rodney (April) Goodenberger of Republican City, NE; sister Betty (Tom) Hardin of Weslaco TX; brother in law, Cliff Woolwine of Roy, UT; thirteen grandchildren; twenty five step grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; sixteen step great grandchildren; as well as a host of extended family members and friends.
