Jessie June Helus

October 9, 1921 — July 5, 2010

Jessie June was born Oct. 9, 1921 to Harold & Hazel (Kilgore) From in Chappell, NE. She was the oldest of four children. She lived in Chappell for 10 years before moving with her family to a farm outside of David City, NE. After grade school she moved to Lincoln, NE where she lived with her Grandparents and attended Jr. High and then High School graduating in 1938.

After graduation she moved to Washington, D.C. where she was employed at the U.S. Maritime Commission as a clerk. This is where she met and married Walter H. Riley on April 24, 1945. They moved to Douglas, WY where they adopted a son, David H. Riley. They then moved to Culbertson, NE where they owned and operated Riley Produce. Walter passed away on April 3, 1963.

On May 7, 1965 she married Louis W. Helus and they moved to McCook and eventually to a small acreage south of McCook. Louis passed away on Aug. 16, 2000. Jessie worked for Safeway for 18 ½ years retiring in 1987. After retirement she opened Trader's Market with a good friend, Betty Hiatt, dealing in antiques and collectibles. She's been a member of the American Legion Auxilary in Culbertson for 54 years. She lived her final years in Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, brother, Bud From, sister-in-law, Millie From, brother-in-laws, Keith Petersen and Art Nelson.

She is survived by her son, David H. Riley and wife, Kim, of McCook, grandson, Bronson Riley and wife Andrea of Lincoln, NE, granddaughter, Korinne Riley of Grant, NE, sister, Marjorie Nelson of Lodgepole, NE, brother, Jim From and wife Mary Jo of Lodgepole, NE and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Memorial services were Friday, July 9, 2010, 1:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Inurnment took place in Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, Nebraska at 3:00 p.m.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
