John "Allen" Prestes died Sunday, May 30, 2010, at his home in McCook. He was 71 years old.
Allen was born on March 4, 1939, in Sundance, Wyoming, to John P. and Edna (Partlow) Prestes. He graduated from Wheeler County High School, in Bartlett, in 1957. He attended Kearney State College.
Allen entered the US Navy on February 25, 1959. He was honorably discharged from active duty into the reserves and served until February 21, 1963.
On May 22, 1964, he was united in marriage to June D. Cox at Paxton, Nebraska. To this union three children were born. Allen and his family located to McCook in 1966 where he was employed by TRW. He was also employed for a time at Miller Weeder in Stratton and Wilcox Well Drilling. In 1985, he started working in production at Dayco. He retired in 2003, after 18 years of service.
He was a member of the McCook Eagle's Club, APA Pool League, and past-member of the McCook Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap shooting and playing pool. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and special buddies Al Garcia and the late Lawrence Peres.
Preceding him in death was his father, John Prestes.
Survivors include his wife, June Prestes, of McCook; his mother, Edna Prestes, of Broken Bow; son, Jay Prestes and wife, Lorie, of McCook; daughters, Tammy and husband, David Downey, of Indianola and Brenda and husband, Mark Bishop, of Rudy, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Jay Robert Prestes, Jr., Chase, Cody and Cole Downey, and Kayla and Alek Bishop; one sister, Linda and husband, Jim Reiter, of Dunning; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Memorials were to be given in his name.
Funeral services were Wednesday, June 2, 2010, 10:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Mike Searcey officiating. Burial took place in McCook.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
