John O. Vogel passed away Friday (May 26, 2006) at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney at the age of 76.
He was born LaVerne Oliver Vogel on July 12, 1929 in Hayes County, Nebraska, the son of the late George W. and Elizabeth (Spahn) Vogel. John grew up in southwest Nebraska, and since 1946 John resided in Beverly.
John owned and operated a mechanic shop for 50 years, working on anything from tractors to lawn mowers. John retired a couple of years ago and was often seen at his brothers mechanic shop giving his advise, offering his opinion, or just visiting; John loved to visit with people. Even though he never had any children of his own, he enjoyed pulling pranks on kids just to watch their reactions. He would encourage kids to learn how to weld, help them work on vehicles, or take time out just to have an ice cream sandwich. John was truly a unique individual; he showed us all a lot of love, kindness, and many valuable lessons throughout life, some not to be forgotten.
John was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Ida Johnson and brother in law Gene Johnson; one sister in law Shirley Vogel; and one nephew Kenneth Vogel.
John is survived by one brother, Dan Vogel of Culbertson; three nieces: Kathy and husband Jim Fickle of Bartley, Sharon and husband John Barger of Lubbock, TX., Mary Forbes and Rick Ebert of Culbertson; one nephew, Ed Johnson and wife Becky of Palisade. Two great nieces: Kristi and husband Mark Holly of Norfolk, VA, Toni and husband Jeremy Moore of San Antonio, TX. Eight great nephews: Mike Fickle and fiancé© Barbie Fernadez of McCook, Charles and wife Charla, Chad and wife Stephanie, and Jason Barger all from Lubbock, TX; Austin, and Tyler Forbes, Dustin and Schyler Vogel, all from Culbertson.
