John W. Weskamp, Jr. died Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. He was 85 years old.
John was born on April 3, 1924, the youngest of six children, to John W. and Lena (Reiners) Weskamp, Sr., in Frontier County. He graduated from Red Willow High School in 1942.
On December 29, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mildred M. Mihm at St. Catherine's Church in Indianola. They made their home on a farm north of McCook where they raised their two children. John was a dedicated farmer all of his life as well as manager of Seaboard Grain Company for many years.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and McCook Elk's Lodge. He enjoyed all kinds of sports, especially baseball, and was a teammate of the early years Havana Baseball Team. Other favorites included bowling, blue rock shooting, Husker football and pitching horseshoes. He loved the outdoors and loved to go hunting with family and friends. His greatest joy in life came from spending time with his family.
Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Lena Weskamp; three brothers, Griff, Ernie and Archie Weskamp; and two sisters, Lorene Malleck and Bernadine Switzer.
Survivors include his wife of almost 62 years, Mildred Weskamp of McCook; son, Tom Weskamp and wife, Brenda, of Weatherford, Texas; daughter, Kathy and husband, Gary Housley, of McCook; seven grandchildren, Bryan, Amanda, Kyle, Nicole, Erica, Brent and Cara; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Memorials were to be given in his name.
Rosary took place Monday, April 13, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Father Peter officiating.
Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, 10:00 a.m. with Father Gary Brethour officiating. With burial at Calvary Cemetery.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
