John Winston
May 23, 1922 — July 29, 2006
John D. Winston died at his home in McCook, (Saturday) July 29, 2006 at the age of 84.
He was born, May 23, 1922 at Middletown, Ohio to Walter and Ruth A. (Saunders) Winston.
He graduated from Withrow High School in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended a trade school in Ohio where he became a drafting engineer. John served in the Army Air Force during WWII from 1942 to 1946 and was stationed in the Marianas Islands in the Philippines.
Following the war he worked for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in McCook for more than 30 years. He met his future wife, Phyllis A. Loper while he was stationed in Red Willow County. They were married January 24, 1946 and lived the rest of their lives in McCook. To this union four daughters were born.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cincinnati, OH., Bernard Elbert VFW Post # 1652, the McCook Elks Lodge #1434 where he was a past Exalted Ruler, Chris Hansen American Legion Post # 203, the Eagles Club, McCook Lodge 135 A. F. & A. M. where he received his 50 year membership pin in 1998 and all the York Rite Bodies at McCook, Tehama Temple Mystic Nobles of the Shrine at Hastings. He loved his family, bowling, golf, card games of all kinds, fishing and hunting.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Phyllis (June 5, 2000); a brother Walter R. Winston and a grand-daughter, Rebecca Osborn.
Survivors include his four daughters, Jacqueline Ann Osborn and husband Martin of Circle Pines, MN, Susan Dee Martin and husband Keith of Wichita, KS, Peggy Jane Bacca and husband David of Hastings, MN and Lisa Michele Felker and husband Burt of McCook; a sister Ruth Ann Clark and husband Raymond of Cincinnati, OH; six grandchildren, Cassandra Champion and husband Glenn, Kelly Osborn, Andrew Martin and wife Collette, Samuel Martin, Megan Bacca and Benjamen Bacca: and one great grandchild, Stuart Champion.
Memorials may be given to the McCook Humane Society, Community Care Hospice Services, American Heart Association, or the American Diabetic Association.
There will be a double inurnment for John and Phyllis in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorial services will be Saturday, August 12, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.
