June (Barger) Spickelmier, age 84, went to be with the lord Monday March 24, 2008 at her home North of Culbertson after a six year battle with cancer.
She was born on the family farm Northeast of Culbertson on June 2, 1923 to Chester and Clara (Seybold) Barger. She grew up on the family farm and attended rural county school near her home. She graduated from Culbertson High School in 1941 and attended McCook College.
On January 12, 1945 she was united in marriage to Harvey Spickelmier in Oberlin, Kansas.
June worked as a sales clerk at Hesteds and Woolworth in McCook. She worked at the McCook Air Base during World War II. During her husband's service in the Navy, she worked at a school for disabled children in Haywood, California. She was a treasurer for Sunny Hill Sunday School and a Sunday school teacher. June was an avid collector of dolls and a member of the Dizzy Doller Doll Club for many years. She was a member of the McCook Christian Church.
June spent many hours with her children, grandchildren and great-grand children caring for them, attending sporting and other events.
She is preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Benjamin Alloway; one brother, Robert Barger; two sisters, Marjorie Brichacek and Geraldine Thorsen; a half-sister, Doris Goodenberger; and two daughters in law; Marilyn Spickelmier and Debbie Spickelmier.
Survivors include husband Harvey of Culbertson; three sons, Russell Spickelmier of Culbertson, Merle Spickelmier of Hemingford, Dennis and wife Jules Spickelmier of Lincoln; two daughters, Carol and husband Rudy Alloway of Phillips and Norma Rogers of McCook; one brother, Donald and wife Dorothy Barger of Culbertson; one sister, Marian and husband Don Thorsen of Gordon; one half-sister, Vera Wacker of Grand Junction, Colorado; one sister in law, Joan Barger of Culbertson; and two brothers in law, Dwight Thorsen of Gordon and Bill Brichacek of Bloomington, Minnesota.
She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Friday, March 28, 2008, 10:30 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
