Katherine Witzke, McCook, formerly of Beaver County, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska. She was 96 years old.
She was born on May 20, 1908 in Beaver County, Oklahoma to Henry D. and Katherine (Dalke) Smith. She lived all of her life in Beaver County, until the last few months when she lived with her daughter Myrna and Raymond Haag of Bartley. She had been living in Hillcrest for the last two weeks.
She attended Union grade school and Greenough High School.
Katherine married to Otis Glen Hughes on June 9, 1927. Otis died August 9, 1928.
She later married William Witzke on August 23, 1941. William died August 20, 1981.
Katherine was a homemaker. She served 25 years as church custodian and did lots of babysitting. She was a member of Turpin United Methodist Church and Turpin Senior Citizen's Center in Turpin, Oklahoma. Her hobbies included sewing, embroidery, crocheting, and gardening.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Henry and Katherine Smith; her two husbands, Otis Hughes and William Witzke; 6 brothers and 4 sisters; 2 step-sons, George Witzke and Wilbert Witzke; 3 grandsons, Randall Moon, Mark Hughes and Ronald Haag; and 2 daughters-in-law, Roberta Hughes and Sheryn Hughes.
Survivors include one son, Glen Hughes and wife, Marcy, of Grants Pass, Oregon; one daughter, Myrna Haag and husband, Raymond, of Bartley; two daughters-in-law, Merreta Witzke and Geraldine Witzke; 14 grandchildren Mike Hughes, Robbie Stillwell, Glenna Bunnell, Susan Kempel, Kendall Moon, Cindy Seberger, Annie Patton, Steve Haag, Colleen Michaelis, Jeanine Bindel, Cindy Witzke, George Witzke, Lisa Helmers, Lori Koehn; 27 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given in her name.
Visitation will be Friday, at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friends may go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.
Local services will be Saturday, March 12, 10:30 a.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel, with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating.
Another service will be Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at the United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. in Turpin. OK. Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery, Liberal, Kansas.
