Larry D. Rakes, McCook, died Sunday, July 2, 2006, at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln. He was 57 years old.

Larry was born on November 10, 1948, to Harold A. and Dorothy L. (Greenwood) Rakes at Nebraska City. He graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1967.

On September 22, 1967, he married Leah S. Smalley. To this union two children, Ginger and Lance were born. They moved to the McCook community in 1974. In November of 1967, Larry was employed with Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad. He continued working for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for over 37 years.

He was a member of McCook Christian Church, National Rifle Association (NRA) and Nebraska City Eagles. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and playing cards. He also enjoyed all sports including croquet, basketball, baseball, and watching car racing. His main love was his family, as well as spending time with his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Harold and Dorothy Rakes; paternal grandparents, Charles and Marie Rakes; maternal grandparents, Flave and Flora Greenwood; mother-in-law, Lila Shafer; and brother-in-law, Lawrence Smalley.

Survivors include his wife, Leah Rakes of McCook; daughter, Ginger and husband, Allan Mitchell, of Gering; son, Lance Rakes and wife, Mandi, of McCook; father-in-law, Leonard Smalley of Scottsbluff; two brothers, Lonnie Rakes and wife, Ramona, of Nebraska City and Lynn Rakes and wife, Denise, of Cambridge; one brother-in-law, Lyle and wife, Peg Smalley, of McCook; four grandchildren, Kerissa, Santanna, and Arianna Mitchell and Konor Rakes; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in his name to the American Heart Association.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be Thursday, July 6, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
