Leslie Milburn Stewart of McCook passed away Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Community Hospital. He was 96 years old.

Leslie was born at Hunter, Kansas to Fred and Julia Ann (May) Stewart. He attended rural school through eight grade.

He farmed for a short time before entering the US Army on August 27, 1942. He served during World War II where he specialized in heavy truck equipment. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. He was honorably discharged on December 1, 1945.

He returned to farming until taking a mechanic position with Klein's Motor and Electric as a diesel mechanic. He was a dedicated employee for over 40 years until his retirement.

On October 4, 1968, he was united in marriage to Susie Annis Alcott. She preceded him in death on September 28, 1986.

Leslie was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and the Veteran's of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed yard work, puttering in his shop, playing Bingo and Checkers, and spending time with his Jack Russell Terrier, Spot. His ultimate joy came from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Fred and Julia Stewart; his wife, Susie Stewart; two brothers, Kenneth and Chester Stewart; and two sisters, Luella Reed and Verda Hall.

Survivors include his son, Bob Schmidt and wife, Jolene, of McCook; two daughters, Ranae and husband, Joe Williams, and Sandel and husband, Marion Brown, all of McCook; three granddaughters, two grandsons and six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in his name to the McCook Humane Society.

Visitation will be Monday from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The casket will be closed. Friends may send condolences to the family at www.carpenterbreland.com

Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 2, 2010, 10:00 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Lance Clay officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
