Mary Florence "Polly" Grim died Friday, November 7, 2008 at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 92 years old.
Mary was born, August 18, 1916 at St. John's, Newfoundland to Garfield and Mary "Gen" (Coleman) Pollard. She grew up at St. John's and attended Mercy and Presentation Convent Schools.
She worked as a secretary in downtown St. John's and at Fort Pepperrell, Newfoundland in the U.S. Army Ordinance Office. She married Sgt. Melvin G. Grim on August 15, 1945 at St. John's and came to the states with him for the first time in September of 1945. They lived at Ulysses until they moved to Milford, Nebraska while Melvin attended Milford Technical School. They moved to McCook in 1952 when Melvin took a position with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Melvin retired in 1980 and passed away August 20, 1981.
Polly volunteered many hours at St. Patrick's Catholic School, Church, Altar Society and Choir. She enjoyed the YMCA Aquatic exercise class, knitting and her family.
Preceded in death by: her parents, husband Melvin, a daughter Margaret; a daughter-in-law, Nelda; son-in-law, Mike Anderson; three sisters, Stella, Margaret, Mary and an infant sister; and two brothers, Ronald and Garfield.
Survivors include: son, Gary Grim of Tucson, Arizona, two daughters, Mary Ann Hlavinka and Theresa Dicke and husband Larry all of McCook; a brother Harold Pollard and wife, Genny of St. John's, Newfoundland; two sister-in-laws, Lillian Pollard of Mt. Pearl, Newfoundland and Eileen Pollard of St. John's, Newfoundland; five grandchildren, Marcie, Laura, Dana, Denise and Brandon; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials were to be given to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Rosary took place Thursday, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial took place at Calvary Cemetery in McCook.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
