Mary E. Thorson

December 8, 1947 — March 15, 2025

Mary Elizabeth Thorson passed away at her home in Indianola, Nebraska, surrounded by family, on March 15, 2025, at the age of 77.

Mary was born on December 8, 1947, in Melbourne, Florida to parents Clarence and Judith Linnemeyer. In 1948 the family moved to Southwest Nebraska where she attended McCook High School.

On November 25, 1965, Mary married Roger Callan in McCook, NE. To this union, three children were born, Russ, Chris and Marcia, who passed away at birth. Mary later married Douglas Thorson at the American Lutheran Church in Cozad on January 16, 1982.

In 1978 she took a job as a secretary at Burn’s Laboratory in McCook where she was eventually promoted to office manager in 1987 and became general manager in the late 90’s. At Burn’s Lab Mary enjoyed 38 years of working with many wonderful people. After retirement Mary took pleasure in traveling with Doug to their ranch in South Dakota.

Mary was a devoted wife and mother who loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Even when distance separated her from loved ones, she made sure to stay in touch through frequent text messages, which her family always appreciated. Mary loved springtime because it meant she could start caring for her garden and raising her beautiful flowers. Mary also enjoyed painting in her free time. She was a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution and very proud of her kinship to Francis Scott Key. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in McCook.

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Douglas; her son, Russell (Karla) Callan of Ord, NE; her granddaughter, Riley (Taylor) Smith, great grandchildren, Natalie Trace and Cole Smith, her grandson, Ryan (Kacia) Callan, great grandchildren, Jordyn, Roan, Briar and Conner Callan all of Ord; her brother, Gary (Inez) Linnemeyer of New Jersey, her sisters, Patty (Russ) Hockman of Monroe, GA, Deb (Bob) Duckworth of Indianola, NE and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Christopher Callan, daughter, Marcia Callan and her brother, David Linnemeyer.
