Mary Cecelia Walz of Indianola died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 88 years old.

Mary was born on January 31, 1920, at Lawrence, Nebraska to Henry Matthew and Catherine Mary (Kuppenbender) Kometscher.

On November 20, 1945, she married John William Walz in Indianola. To this union, six children were born. They made their home on a farm in the Indianola community where Mary was a busy homemaker and helped with the farming operation.

She was member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and Altar Society. She enjoyed quilting, cooking and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Henry and Catherine Kometscher; her husband, John Walz on Dec. 18, 2001; one great-grandson, Erik Werkmeister; daughter-in-law, Paula Walz; four sisters, Margaret, Elizabeth, Anna and Catherine; and five brothers, Herman, August, Steve, Lawrence and Leo Kometscher.

Survivors include one son, Bernard Walz of Indianola; five daughters, Sister Cecilia Walz of Waverly, Alice and husband, William “Dude” Tines of Venango, Mildred “Millie” and husband, Mike Cuellar of Indianola, Virginia “Ginny” and husband, Ben Bortner of McCook and Agnes and husband, Ed Richard, of Indianola; one sister, Frances Borgerding of Freeport, MN; one brother, Martin Kometscher of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren, Mike and (Lesa) Tines of Culbertson, Matt and (Chelsey) Tines of Grant, Chris and (Kim) Cuellar of Mullen, Jennifer Tines and Brenda Walz of Lincoln, Jamie Werkmeister of North Platte, Lisa and (Elton) Butterfield, Jill and (Carl) Koenig, Wayne and (Lisa) Bortner, Blaine Bortner all of McCook, Brian Walz, Kendra, Tyler and Joey Cuellar all of Indianola; 16 great-grandchildren, Jazmine Davenport, Jakub Walz, Jadyn Beavers, Bailey Walz, Landon and Reese Tines, Jarin and Brock Tines, Cory Cuellar, Paige and Jaxson Werkmeister, Becca and Addison Koenig, Kyler, Riley and Zoey Bortner, several nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Rosary was on Sunday, August 24, 2008, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial took place at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola on Monday August 25, 2008, 10:30 a.m. with Father Thomas McGuire officiating. Burial took place in St. Catherine’s Cemetery.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
