Maurine Elaine Hofferber

Maurine Elaine (Nelson) Hofferber, 92, died Saturday (February 26, 2005) at Community Hospital in McCook.

Maurine was born February 21, 1913 to Edward C. and Rena M. (Johnette) Nelson in Loomis. She graduated from Loomis High School in 1929 and from Kearney State Teachers College in 1934.

She taught school for two years in rural Phelps County schools, in Scotia, and in Arapahoe High School before marrying George F. Hofferber in 1936. As her husband was a civil engineer for the state of Nebraska, they moved 33 times before being stationed in Lincoln, Kearney and McCook during World War II for the building of the air bases there and the prisoner of war camp in Indianola.

She taught home economics in McCook Junior and Senior High from January 1947 until May 1961. In 1952 she received her Master's Debree from UNL and did graduate work at the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Ames, Iowa, and the University of Wisconsin. In 1961 they moved to Kearney where she was a professor of home economics at Kearney State College until her retirement in 1976.

Mrs. Hofferber was a life member of the Nebraska Parent-Teachers Association and Kearney State College Alumni Association. She was associated with Xi Phi, an honorary scholarship and leadership fraternity, Omega Alpha Tau, an honorary science fraternity, and Sigma Theta Phi, a social fraternity. She is also a member of Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae and Chapter AS PEO sisterhood. Maurine was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kearney, where she worked in the Methodist's Woman's Association until she moved back to McCook in 1998.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, one infant son, Donald Lee, her brothers, Marion and Maurice and a sister-in-law and dear friend, Evelyn.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn and husband Barry Hammond of Bowie, MD and Jeanie and husband Richard Hauxwell of McCook, seven grandchildren 17 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, a sister-inn-law and dear friend, Marie Moore, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Maurine was a loving mother, grandmother, and aunt, a caring teacher, and a wonderful friend to many so will be sorely missed by all.

Memorials were to be given to the UNK Foundation, the United Methodist Church of Kearney, or in her name.

Inurnment took place in the Moses Hill Cemetery at Loomis.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
