Biography

Mildred Marie, daughter of John and Eva Maisel was born March 20, 1914, on a farm north of Indianola, Nebraska. She attended school at District 7, not far from their home.

Mildred moved with her parents to a farm southwest of McCook in 1928. She was confirmed April 22, 1928, at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook, Nebraska, where she has been a member all of her life. She worked for many farm wives in the area, helping cook for threshers, or helping with new babies in the families.

Mildred married Cassius Dutton December 17, 1933, and lived on a farm southwest of McCook. They were blessed with three children, Dorothy, Leonard and James. Cassius preceded her in death in 1956.

Mildred then moved to McCook and lived at the Lazy L. Mobile Ranch for several years. She enjoyed writing letters, baking and besides baby-sitting her own grandchildren, she baby-sat with children of many other young couples in McCook.

On November 18, 1977, she married Leonard L. Holmes. They enjoyed traveling and playing cards. Leonard passed away December 1, 1981.

March 1, 1984, Mildred married Robert Doyle, and they lived on Robert's farm northeast of McCook. Mildred enjoyed the farm life with her garden and the animals. They also enjoyed traveling until her health failed.

It was barely into the new year of 1992, when Mildred suffered a stroke. She spent several weeks in the Kearney hospital and then to Madonna in Lincoln for rehabilitation.

She was no longer paralyzed and her speech returned but there was damage to parts of her brain. Therefore, life became harder for her, as well as for her husband, Bob. She could no longer write the many nice letters to her friends and family, and words didn't come out as she wanted. Eventually she moved to Hillcrest Nursing Home and was residing there at the time of her death on Thursday, March 25, 2004. Robert preceded her in death October 24, 2001.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husbands, Cassius Dutton, Leonard Holmes and Robert Doyle, her parents; a sister, Agnes Landgraf; brother Walter Maisel, and an infant baby sister, Ruth; also daughter-in-law Marilyn Dutton; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Dorothy Liess and husband, Don, of Sun City West, AZ; Leonard Dutton of Idalia, CO and James Dutton and wife, Jane, of Broomfield, CO; nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
