Mildred M. Sughroue, former longtime resident of McCook, NE and Denver, CO passed away Monday, September 10, 2012 at El Dorado Manor in Trenton. She was 101 years old.
Mildred was born in Indianola, NE on February 21, 1911, the oldest of four children, to John and Mary (Weskamp) Gillen. She graduated valedictorian from Havanna High School in 1929. Mary Gillen died of an early age, leaving Mildred to honor her promise to her mother that she would help raise her younger sister Lea and her brother Don ages ten and five at the time. Her brother Lloyd was on his own by then.
She met John H. Sughroue at a dance in Indianola and later married him on August 5, 1942, in Santa Barbara, CA where John was stationed during World War II. They were married for 34 years before John passed away in 1978.
Mildred worked for attorneys at law; John E. Kelley, Lafe Hurley and Bill Lyons. She also worked for former Governor Morrison of Nebraska. Mildred sold Avon products in both McCook and Denver where she moved with her family in 1966. While in Denver she worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield until her retirement in 1980.
Mildred lived in Windsor Gardens for many years from 1983 until 2005. She remained active playing cards, golf, bingo, the piano and enjoyed square dancing. She volunteered at the Windsor Gardens medical clinic. Mildred also took pride in traveling and babysitting all of her seven grandchildren.
Mildred was a lifelong Catholic, active in St. Patrick’s parish in McCook and Christ the King parish in Denver. She was also active with many aspects of volunteering within the Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and John Gillen; husband, John Sughroue; brothers, Lloyd and Don Gillen; and granddaughter, Abbie Grinde.
Mildred is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Margaret Sughroue of McCook; daughters, Sharon Sughroue of McCook and Linda Grinde of Littleton, CO; sister, Lea Kjar of Lexington; grandchildren, Daniel Grinde of Littleton, Amy, Andrew and Alex Sughroue of Omaha, Rev. Adam Sughroue of Lincoln, Dionne Grinde of Greeley, CO and David Grinde and wife, Vicky, of Aurora, CO.
Visitation will be Friday, September 14, 2012, from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.
Rosary will be Friday, September 14, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, September 15, 2012, 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook with Father Gary Brethour, Father Adam Sughroue, and Father Lothar Gilde officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
