Myrlin "Mert" Arthur Burton, 77, of Bartley, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska. He had been a resident of Hillcrest Nursing Home since August of 2004.
He was born April 8, 1930, to William A. and Elma E. (Hodgkin) Burton at Bartley, Nebraska, and graduated from Bartley High School in 1948.
On May 10, 1952, he married Donna L. Stewart at the Bartley Christian Church. They made their home on the farm north of Bartley. To this union two children were born, William and Patricia.
He entered the US Army on December 4, 1951, and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the Korean War. He transferred to the Army Reserve on December 2, 1953, and was honorably discharged on December 3, 1959.
Myrlin farmed for 47 years and was employed by Klein's Motor and Electric for 23 years. He served as secretary of School District 21 and was an elder, deacon, and teacher at the Bartley Christian Church. In 2006, he transferred his membership to the McCook Christian Church, and was the Hillcrest American Heart Association King. His greatest joys were his children and grandchildren. Myrlin also enjoyed Husker football, animals, bird watching, air rifle and pistol target shooting.
Myrlin was preceded in death by his wife Donna, on April 22, 2006; his parents, William and Elma; brothers Gerald and Francis; son-in-law, Danny Sughroue; and infant granddaughter, Brittany Lee Burton.
Survivors include his daughter, Patricia Smith, and husband, Tom of Bartley; son, William "Bill" Burton and wife, Coralyn "Cori" of McCook; five grandchildren, Danette Sughroue of Kearney, Tye Smith of Bartley, Brett, Brooke, and Breanne Burton of McCook; sister Audrey Troester of McCook and twin sister and brother-in-law Marion and Harold Raburn of Holdrege; sisters-in-law Grace Burton and Goldene Burton; brother-in-law Kenneth Stewart and wife, Donna all of Bartley.
Memorials may be given in his name to McCook Christian Church.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial was in the Bartley Cemetery.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
