Orville Dale Stewart, age 89, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at Hillcrest Nursing Home.
He was born in Culbertson to Roy Leslie and Hazel Leota (Bymer) Stewart on March 26, 1920. He entered the US Army on March 4, 1942 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on January 24, 1946.
After the service, Orville returned to Culbertson. He met and later married Ruth Virginia Schamel on August 19, 1946 in Kansas City. Orville worked in construction while living in Kansas City. They later moved back to Indianola where they raised their ten children and Orville farmed and worked at the grain elevator for many years. He later worked in fertilizer and the carpentry business until his retirement.
Orville was a member of the Indianola United Methodist Church and Veteran's of Foreign Wars. He and Ruth loved to dance, swim and go boating together. They especially loved the time spent being with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Hazel Stewart; three sisters, one in infancy, Atha Alice, Beulah Miles and Martha Burns; and four brothers, Cecil, Virgil, Donald and Roy Stewart.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Stewart of McCook; children, Dale Stewart and wife, Cheryl, of Indianola, Cindy and husband, Dutch Hughes, of McCook, Joy and husband, Joe Marquardt, of Indianola, Steve Stewart of Lincoln, Shirley and husband, Larry Brooks, of Indianola, Doug Stewart of Indianola, Doris and husband, Denis Stritt, of Indianola, Christi Stewart of Lincoln, Gloria and husband, Dean Liess, of Indianola and Tammy Stewart of Phoenix, AZ; one brother, Wayne Stewart of McCook; four sisters, Joann Gillen, Lorna Trupp, Dorothy and husband, Albert White, and Edna VanFleet all of McCook; 24 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Memorials were to be given in his name to the Indianola Fire Department.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 9, 2010, 11:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Pastor Lance Clay officiating. Burial took place in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Indianola, with a military honor committal.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
