Sylvia Altman died Monday, December 26, 2005, at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln. She was 88 years old.
Sylvia was born December 6, 1917, to Mary (Schmidt) and Hugh E. Little. She graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1934 and St. Francis School of Nursing in 1941, receiving her degree as a Registered Nurse. She worked in hospitals in Grand Island, Butte, MT., Omaha and McCook.
On December 13, 1941, she married Adolph Joseph Altman in Omaha. To this union two children were born. After Adolph was discharged from the service they made their home on a farm in Hayes County near Culbertson. Sylvia was a homemaker and a nurse for Community Hospital in McCook. After 28 years of service she retired in 1982.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Veteran's of Foreign War Auxiliary of Culbertson and Daughters of the Union Veterans. In her free time she enjoyed all kinds of needle work, including crocheting, tatting, quilting and sewing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph; parents, Mary and Hugh Little; brother, Dale Little; and step-mother, Martha West.
Survivors include one son, James Altman of Lafayette, LA; one daughter, Patricia and husband, Charlie Powers, of McCook; one sister Rose Smith of Delta, CO; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials can be given in her name to the Salvation Army, VFW Auxiliary in Culbertson or American Heart Association.
Mass of Christian Burial took place at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook, Thursday, December 29, 2005, 10:30 a.m. with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial was in the Hayes Center Cemetery.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
