Thomas Douglas Bernard passed away Friday, December 20, 2013 at his home in McCook. He was 64 years old.

Tom was born on March 3, 1949 in Yankton, SD to parents, Douglas A. and Ursula Regina (Smith) Bernard. He graduated from McCook High School in 1967 and then continued his education at Kearney State Teachers College.

On November 21, 1975 he was united in marriage to Joanne Kotschwar. To this union a son, Nick, was born.

Tom was owner and operator of Generations Restaurant and Bar in Grand Island and part owner of Nebraskaland Distributers in McCook for many years. He also managed an apartment complex and was an insurance agent for life and health investments.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was also a member of the McCook Elks having served in the capacity of Exhaulted Ruler. He was involved with many benevolent functions including the haunted house. Tom’s hobbies included traveling, golfing, hunting and fishing. He was an avid Husker fan.

Preceding him in death was his father Douglas Bernard.

He is survived by his son, Nick Bernard and wife, Julie, of Omaha; wife, Joanne Bernard of Grand Island; mother, Ursula Bernard of Kearney; sister, B’Anne and husband, Jerry Zapp, of Kearney; brother, Jeff Bernard and wife, Kathy, of Denver; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Rosary will be Thursday, December 26, 2013, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 27, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
