Velma Evelyn Matz died Friday, November 26, 2004 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Syracuse, Nebraska. She was 94 years old.
Velma was born on August 1, 1910 to Allen Henry and Vevia C. (Turner) Poush at Memphis, Nebraska. She grew up in Cambridge and attended Cambridge Public Schools. She came to McCook in 1941 and was employed at Woolworth's and Schuering's Bakery.
On December 29, 1945, she married Peter J. Matz at Oberlin, Kansas. After her husband's death on August 6, 1959, she started working for DeGroff's Department Store in the ladies apparel. She retired in 1975.
She was a 50 year member of the First Congregational Church in McCook and Eureka Chapter #86 Eastern Star. Other membership included the Daughter's of the Nile- Hastings, Bahia Nilettes, Federated Woman's Club, Burlington Northern Veteran's Ladies Auxiliary and American Association of Retired People.
Preceding her in death were her parents Allen and Vevia Poush; her husband, Peter Matz; three brothers, Paul, Homer and Omar in infancy; and sister-in-law Ruth Poush.
Survivors include niece, Barbara Clark and husband, Scott of Syracuse; great-nephew, Joshua Clark and wife Amy of Ashland; great-niece, Hilary Seelhoff and husband Andy of Unadilla; and sister-in-law Virginia Poush of Syracuse; and two great-great nephews.
Memorials may be given in her name to the First Congregational Church or the McCook Senior Center.
Funeral services were Monday, November 29, 2004, 1:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in McCook with Pastor Steve King officiating. Burial took place in Fairview Cemetery, Cambridge, Nebraska.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook was in charge of the arrangements.
